The range expansion of Clibanarius erythropus to the UK suggests that other range-shifting intertidal species may not follow

چکیده
Abstract The ranges of species are shifting as a consequence anthropogenic climate change. In the marine realm biogeographic transition zones could form barriers to dispersal and inhibit range-shift, but little is known about this potential effect. hermit crab Clibanarius erythropus appeared in UK 2016 with nearest reproducing population being on northern coast Brittany. This raises questions which conditions may have permitted C. cross English Channel (7.25°W, 49.00°N) whether barrier be overcome by other intertidal species. Dispersal simulations suggest larvae arrived 2014, originated from North Brittany, experienced mean temperature around 16 °C, took longer than 20 days transported across channel. transportation Brittany southwest appears rare driven occasional, unusual ocean currents. continue prevent pelagic that settle within days, such many gastropod, annelids, macroalgae, successfully range expanding UK. was only landmass it feasible originated. • Changes in community composition resulting from climate change entail modifications of biotic interactions and reshape local species distributions. Such changes are currently occurring in nettle-feeding butterflies in Sweden where Araschnia levana has recently expanded its range northward and is now likely to interact with the resident species (Aglais urticae and Aglais io). Butterfly occurre...
متن کاملExpansion load and the evolutionary dynamics of a species range.
Expanding populations incur a mutation burden, the so-called expansion load. Using a mixture of individual-based simulations and analytical modeling, we study the expansion load process in models where population growth depends on the population's fitness (i.e., hard selection). We show that expansion load can severely slow down expansions and limit a species' range, even in the absence of envi...
متن کاملReduced inbreeding depression after species range expansion.
Many species expanded their geographic ranges from core "refugium" populations when the global climate warmed after the Pleistocene. The bottlenecks that occur during such range expansions diminish genetic variation in marginal populations, rendering them less responsive to selection. Here, we show that range expansion also strongly depletes inbreeding depression. We compared inbreeding depress...
